I always wanted to be a writer. The need to be creative has been with me ever since I was a kid, the spark that comes from reading a lot of books and watching a lot of television. When I was 5 or 6 years old, my first writings were drawing stick figures on manilla paper to tell stories. Writing is simply someone creating new ideas and putting their ideas out into the world.
Do you know what was once a new idea? America. America does not exist because of preordained destiny. America is here because the victors of revolutionary independence created a new system of government that was meant to serve the needs of American Citizens. America’s foundation is a series of new ideas written on paper more than 200 years ago: The Constitution of The United States.
Unlike a number of currently elected members of The House, I did not go to law school. I did not go to medical school. I did not go to business school. I received my Bachelor’s Degree from Southern Methodist University in Cinema-Television. That’s right…I went to film school! My education gives me a creative advantage when it comes to writing new laws and policy.
I try my hardest to be honest and direct with people. Some have even called me blunt. I simply say what I believe and I promise that I will continue to do just that.
I believe in the power of listening and learning. During this campaign, I hope to engage with a wide range of people in this district. I will always remain open to changing my mind on an issue. Listening to different perspectives and learning from others could lead me to rethink my position. However, if I am willing to have my mind changed, I believe it’s only fair to ask the same of others. If I take the time to offer a thoughtful and well-reasoned opinion, I hope others will be open to hearing my perspective.
Lastly, you may have noticed the owl logo. I like the idea of being an “owl” rather than being a “hawk” or a “dove”, two terms often used in politics. What stands out about an owl is its powerful sense of sight. It can see clearly in near darkness and from a great distance. It can also rotate its head around to see in all directions.
That’s the perspective I want to bring as the Representative for California’s 41st District. I want to focus on seeing problems from far away and from different sides. By doing that, I can develop the best solutions. It’s important to have someone in The House of Representatives with the capability to address the problems before they get out of control and cause harm to others.
